But you’re right. It seems I’ve held onto a few inconveniences, as well as a few advantages, despite the change. So. Not fully human again, but close enough.
[Henry, she can only promise not to turn you over to the espers, she can't promise to never burn you again. She'll keep that to herself, she's not trying to start a fight here.]
To circle back... So you were in this dimension that changed you into a different creature. But before that, the US government which included this Dr. Brenner, had you under lock and key I'm assuming?
That’s right. An underground lab, right under the nose of my small town. I was brought there when I was just a child once Dr. Brenner knew of my existence.
I was a prisoner there, the first of several more. We were…
(But she was a stupid, guileless child, charmed by the mystery of the arcane and the endless possibilities. She walked into a trap without ever understanding until it was too late.) ]
I see. Say no more.
[There is a difference, however, between the cruelty of an all-powerful deity's whims, and the cruelty of humans against their fellow man in the name of progress.
Amelia's gaze turns to her red and white roses on the other end of her garden.]
[Pity isn’t what he wants, not truly. It rankles his pride. But maybe it’s what he should angle for now, the best he can.
Easy when he can tell the story as he sees fit; it’s not like she’s a mind reader, for instance. Though credit where it’s due: nothing he’s said is a lie.]
It does. [A smile.] And so. I went from one prison to another. Always trying to claw my way towards freedom.
[He probably had some measure of it if he hadn't been so disoriented and angry on the beach. Then again, this isn't where he's meant to be and she wasn't supposed to have anyone on house arrest.]
Well. I only have one other question for now. I'm sure others will come up naturally but... Mr. Creel.
[Amelia sets her tea down in the grass and leans forward.]
Do you want to be here? This reality? Or do you have other intentions to be executed elsewhere?
[And thus, a question where he may shear away the finer details. He sips his drink. Condensation sluices down the side.]
I want to be home. In my reality. That’s all I ever wanted, what I was working for, back in that other dimension.
And while being here is… certainly nice, it isn’t where I belong. [It isn’t the world he needs to remake.] Ideally, I find a way back through the very thin veil that apparently separates this world and mine. And you wash your hands of me.
Something about this doesn't sit right with Amelia. Indeed, she at least believes that he doesn't have an interest in this world, which in itself is surprising. There has to be something else driving him to return to his reality, something to settle.
Is it really so bad if the problem is a whole other world away?
And yet, she finds herself saying:]
I'll see what I can do. There is a caveat, however. You know. It's always something.
[She stands up and she has her hands held tightly together.]
[He frowns a little. It’s not a wholly unreasonable concern, but why should he have to suffer just because the veil here is paper thin? Why should he care who she lets in?]
What sort of things? Monsters?
[But he can pretend at curiosity.]
And does the mean you’re not willing to try? I can’t stay here.
[Another pause. This would sit unwell with him normally, but if he thinks of it as a transactional exchange of favors, then maybe it’s not so bitter a pill to swallow.]
And how long will the entire process take, exactly?
I'll say this; in all my years of spellcraft, I haven't intentionally punctured a hole.
But I'm not going to be doing a messy job.
[ There are protection spells to be applied in strategic areas, containment measures, avoiding the espers, and of course, planning to seal things up again... Gonna be a fun summer vacation.
Rome wasn't built in a day and thus opening up a seam to create a path to an alternate world won't either.]
I also want a promise that you will not be harming anyone else in this world with your powers unless you need to protect yourself. I already promised you that I wouldn't hand you over to anyone else. I'll find that difficult to keep if you're the type of esper that wants to slap others around with telekinesis and the like.
[So, two items of prerequisite, then: that he help her with his abilities when the time comes, and that he harms no one else in this world unless in self-defense.
Again, reasonable. But again, Henry so hates being told what to do. Yet he is cool-headed enough (now, at least) to know that there's little choice in the matter, and that this route--with a strange witch aiding in his desire to return to Hawkins--might actually be favorable for him, in the end.
So, he tilts his head ever so slightly, and smiles again.]
I don't think any of that is unreasonable. But before I accept, do we know what sort of monsters we're talking about? My abilities will be helpful, you're sure?
The possibilities of what we'll have to deal with are variable. That's the most risky part about this process since there are many unknown terrors in that wider expanse of other worlds.
[It's never going to be the same creatures; perhaps they'll seem familiar if based on human record but Amelia has seen a lot and a lot of them make up their own shapes.
She shrugs at his latter question.]
I do find that basic telekinesis is effective again most things with a spinal cord. And depending on the rest of your skill set you might be more well equipped than you think.
[I do find that basic telekinesis is effective again most things with a spinal cord. That makes him huff out a laugh. True, of course, and he’s certainly proven it before; but to hear it so clinically from her surprises him.]
Breaking a few bones is easy enough. If more’s needed, we’ll tackle it as it comes.

And by the way, I apologize for enhancing the sunlight and nearly roasting you in front of my class.
[AMELIA THAT IS THE LATEST APOLOGY EVER]

Not much of a welcome to a new world. Don’t do it again.
[ma’am!!!]

I assume. It’s only been a day.

That would explain the lack of flowers.

He watches her as she stands.]
And what’s that?
no subject
[She ponders and the continues.]
Unlike your entrance which was unintentional, there are always other things trying to get in. That is the risk that I am talking about here.
[So if she helps him something just as bad or possibly worse will jump at the opportunity to claim this realm.]
You could say the reason why magic and witches exist in the first place is to fend them off.

Of course I do.

Then we are in agreement?
[This may be one of the stranger arrangements she had made. But if it pacifies this dangerous man, the days ahead may be a little more smooth.]
no subject
[It’ll have to do.]
That means you have a new roommate, I assume.
[Unless she’s gonna fling him elsewhere-]
no subject
[Amelia steps closer to Henry and holds out her hand.]
I agree to find a way back to your dimension and will allow you to stay with me. I will not hand you over to the espers.
[It goes unsaid that if he's out of line, she will deal with him immediately. She waits for him to shake back.]

Then deal. Though… this does mean I now have the freedom to move about as I like?
